Rolfing^® Structural Integration primarily emphasizes the need to work through the client's myofascial network in bringing about structural integration and resolving somatic dysfunction. Recent research, however, has demonstrated that the relationship between practitioner and client plays a significant role in our clinical success, even more so than technique. This therapeutic relationship is mediated through the emotional bond that is formed and the regulation of feelings between our clients and ourselves.

This "feeling of what is happening" will be explored through the theories of pre- and perinatal development, somatic psychology, and trauma theory. Students will discover how to pace, modulate, and titrate their presence and manipulation skills in facilitating mind and body integration in our clinical work.

You will learn:

1. What intersubjectivity is and its importance in the therapeutic relationship.
2. The origins of form and embodiment- "How did I get shaped this way?"
3. Skills in tracking and responding to ANS and CNS discharge.
4. How to use somatic transference and countertransference to avoid practitioner burnout.
5. Methods for staying present with psycho-emotional issues.

Students attending this workshop will improve their structural integration skills and be able to resolve the "lingering" psycho-emotional issues in any given session. Most importantly, students will learn to bring their whole self, body, mind, emotions, and spirit to every session.

William Smythe, M.A., is a pioneer in the fields of Somatic Psychology and Rolfing^® Structural Integration. He has practiced Rolfing since 1979, served as a Faculty Member of the Rolf Institute from 1990 to 2001, and received his Master’s Degree in Somatic Psychology in 2007. Bill is also trained in Somatic Experiencing^®, Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapy, and Native American Shamanism. He lives and practices in Santa Fe, New Mexico.
