This Continuing Education class is open to Certified Rolfers® and practitioners of Structural Integration who have completed an IASI-approved SI Training Program

Rolfing theory does not have a coherent agreed-upon perspective regarding the relationship between viscera and the musculoskeletal systems of the body. While there are well-developed osteopathic methods, aka Barral, these methods focus on the viscera predominantly with little attention to the relationship of visceral fascia to the deep fascia.

In this course we will explore the relationship of the mediastinum and parietal plura to the deep fascias of the thorax, upper extremities and the head and neck. These visceral fascias, the mediastinum and parietal plura, have specific regions of attachment to the deep fascias of the thorax. The deep fascias of the thorax include the pectoral fascia and clavipectoral fascia anteriorly, the serratus anterior fascia laterally and the thoracolumbar fascia posteriorly. The fascias of the thorax are in turn contiguous with fascias of the arms and hands (ie brachial fascia, antebrachial fascia, and palmar fascia) as well as the fascias of the head and neck. This is of course, the territory related to an Upper Girdle Session. Our course will utilize these anatomical relationships to enhance your ability to effect structure and function in the context of Rolfing® Structural Integration. We will apply this information to deepen our ability to see, feel and effect patterns of maladaptive structure and function related to respiration and the upper girdle.

The course will include guided somatic meditations, lecture/discussion periods, skill-building practicums, and the opportunity to exchange a session with a colleague.

Lecture/Discussion Topics:
- Detailed fascial anatomy - deep fascia, visceral fascia (investing and insertional)
- Relationships of insertional fascia to deep fascia
- Fascial (causes, palpation guidelines, effective treatment)
- How intake forms and the interview process can orient you to the fascial relationships between viscera and musculoskeletal systems, and guide treatment strategy

Practicums:
- Palpation and treatment of densifications in the girdles as they relate to load transmission to/from the respiratory system
- Palpation and treatment of densifications relating the respiratory system and deep fascias of the thorax, head and neck
