Summary

Details

An opportunity for conversation and exploration with author Aline Newton and collaborator Rebecca Carli-Mills on the themes introduced in the book: Reimagining the Body: Somatic Practice, Embodiment and the Science of Movement. We will meet once per month and each meeting will focus on the theme from each section of the book, with time for discussion and applications in movement.

The meeting dates and themes are:

February 23 Part I: Moving
March 30 Part II: Expressing
April 20 Part III:Perceiving
May 18 Part IV: Imagining
June 22 Part V: Becoming

In addition to exploring the concepts of each part of the book in conversation, during the zoom class we will use the movement explorations from the month’s reading as our starting point and evolve the experience to fit the participants. This is a great way to deepen your own movement practice, whether simply sitting, walking, or meditating, practicing yoga or any other movement system. Each meeting includes:

Guided embodiment practices to support your own movement inquiry
Practical tools that can be integrated into client work
Discussion to help ground theory in lived experience and clinical application

The meetings will be recorded.
No NCBTMB credits given.

About the Instructors

Aline Newton's career as an Advanced Certified Rolfer and Rolf Movement Educator spans nearly four decades. During that time, she has never stopped exploring the ideas, contexts, and effects of Rolfing, movement, and bodywork. A prominent teacher and celebrated contributor to the Rolfing community, Aline specializes in bringing movement concepts and practices to a broad, mainstream audience. As well as certifications for Rolfing, therapeutic massage and bodywork, Aline holds a BA in Philosophy and Psychology from Johns Hopkins University and an MA in Education from the University of Toronto. She studied with renowned French Rolfer Hubert Godard for 30 years. In addition to seeing clients privately, Aline is a highly in-demand speaker. She has been a guest lecturer at Harvard University, the Osher Center for Integrative Medicine at Harvard Medical School, and the Kahn Institute of Smith College. Aline has taught at MIT, and currently teaches at the Boston Conservatory at Berklee's Alexander Training Institute and the Rolf Institute of Structural Integration, where she is the Rolf Movement Faculty Chair.

Rebecca Carli-Mills is a Certified Advanced Rolfer®, Rolf Movement® Instructor, and ISMETA-Registered Master Somatic Movement Therapist with over three decades of experience in the field of somatic education. Her journey into somatic movement began during her undergraduate and graduate studies in dance performance and choreography (B.A., M.F.A.), which laid the foundation for her deep interest in the expressive and functional dimensions of human movement. She earned her Rolf Movement Integration certification in 1987, became a Certified Rolfer® in 1989, and completed her Advanced Rolfing® certification in 1992. In 1994, she graduated from the Pennsylvania Gestalt Center for Psychotherapy and Training and soon after joined the Rolf Movement faculty of the Rolf Institute®, where she also served as Chairperson of the faculty. Rebecca’s work is deeply informed by her long-standing study with Hubert Godard, whose research on gravity, perception, and movement has been central to her clinical and teaching approach. She also integrates training in craniosacral, visceral, neural, and energetic osteopathy, as well as a range of somatic movement disciplines. A former board member of ISMETA, Rebecca has taught somatic movement courses at multiple universities and continues to contribute to the field through education, mentoring, and clinical practice. She currently maintains an active private practice in Bethesda MD. Her work supports clients in discovering greater ease, agency, and enjoyment in movement and daily life.
